PALAZZO FARNESE – sold

The cardinal Alexandre Farnese, who became Pope Paul III, commissioned Michelangelo for continuing the Palazzo Farnese when Sangallo died. Michelangelo wanted to ennoble the palace by adding a monumental cornice on top. This 5-foot deep cornice was so heavy that part of the foundation fell apart when first installed. The noble cornice stayed but still pressures and curbs the structure of the palace. Part of Hidden Roma series.
